Young Adult Realistic Fiction

Author John Green is back with his first young adult novel since the famed The Fault in our Stars (2012), and boy does he take readers on an emotional roller coaster of a ride through the inner mind of protagonist, Aza Holmes. Aza is a sixteen-year-old teenage girl living in Indianapolis who is fighting an internal civil war on a day-to-day basis as her thoughts spiral out of control due to anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Her best friend and sidekick, Daisy, is a talkative, free-spirited whirl-wind of a girl who convinces Asa to help her find the mysterious whereabouts of missing billionaire magnate Russell Pickett, who fled his home after being accused of bribery and fraud. Pickett’s son Davis happens to be a boy Aza knew long ago in her childhood. So Daisy and Aza set out on a quest to look for clues to Russell Pickett’s disappearance at Davis’s massive mansion complete with golf courses, pools and a terrarium with a Tuatara, a lizard-like creature whose species has been around as long as that of the dinosaurs. Along the way, Aza experiences her first budding romance while discovering the importance of loyalty and life-long friendship as she navigates through life with the never ending spiral of her thoughts ever tightening.

This novel contains a balanced mix of dialogue, description of and action that will tug at your heart strings and leave you rooting for Aza as she becomes increasingly consumed by the never ending spiral of her thoughts. This novel provides a raw and honest look into the world of mental illness, and offers a new perspective of how to look at the world and the nature of the self. The book is found in [Lower Level] MCN YA Fic Green.
