"Chalice of the Gods" is the 7th book in the "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series about Greek Mythology in the modern world. In the book, the main character Percy Jackson must complete quests from the gods to get college recommendation letters. He receives a quest from Ganymede, the cup-bearer of the gods who asks him to find his chalice, suspecting that another god had stolen it from him.

What did you think about the book?:

I very much enjoyed this book as I have the rest of the series. Rick Riordan knows how to perfectly incorporate action, emotions, and comedy in a natural way that makes a story very entertaining. He also knows how to write extremely likeable characters that you can't help but love. My favorite part of the book was the chapter where Percy Jackson and his friends had to face a hoard of serpents. This scene was a perfect example of how well Riordan mixes emotions in the books because it had me both laughing and crying.

It is an emotional story of a teenager who is dealing with stereotypes, high expectations from parents, and lack of attention from her parents as they are workaholics. She finds solace in company of her grandparents while working at their deli. It shows the journey of character of Jackie as she learns to deal with problems yet stay focused. The relationship of Jackie and her grandparents is so heartwarming. The story revolves around Zora Broussard living in New Orleans with her aunt and cousins as she had to leave NY due to some tragedy. Just like her mother and grandmother Zora has magical powers. She loves music and sometimes when she is playing music, her magical powers get activated. She tries to make a deal with Mama B to get rid of her magic. Zora agrees but still had to pay Mama B. Even though she was not allowed to sneak out of the house and meet people due to discrimination, her aunt caught her sneaking out of house to meet someone who belonged to different race. What follows is a great story of magic, challenges, and family drama. Eventually Zora moves to San Francisco with her 2 children.

It is a good book as it feels like a magical fairy tale. It gives out a good message that you have to believe in yourself and be confident. Don’t let the negativity around you influence your thoughts and actions. I like how the character of Zora feels so relatable as she is confused yet knows how to get things done at times. I liked the way character growth was shown as Zora learned to control her powers.
The Glass Castle
Author:Jeanette Walls

Plot Summary:

In the book "The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls, it discussed her unconventional childhood. She grew up in a dysfunctional family with her irresponsible parents. Her mother, Rose Mary, prioritizes her art over taking care of her children. Her father, Rex Walls, promises her that he will build a glass Castle but struggles with alcoholism. For example, there are incidences when Jeanette and her sibling go through the day only having one meal and that too forging for it themselves. Despite the challenges her faces, she learns resilience and eventually finds success on her own through her hard work.

What did you think about the book?:

I think the book was very intriguing as it depicted the struggle and challenges Jeanette faces throughout her childhood. I was very amused by how carefree her parents are and how they don't really care for their children. For instance, Jeanette's sister Lori isn't able to see clearly but she doesn't get glasses until a lot longer in the book, and even then her parents don't believe she needs glasses. It was very sad to me when Lori puts on the glasses and gets super happy when she is finally able to see. She doesn't even know that her eyesight was bad and believes that's just how she sees things. Also Jeanette's perspective and opinion about her life as she gets older changes, demonstrating her growth. This helps the reader feel as though they are seeing her mindset change as she ages.
